X Mile: Building the Infrastructure for Japan's Non-Desk Economy
We are pleased to share a recent investment by Vertex Growth in X Mile, a vertical technology and workforce platform for Japan’s non-desk sectors.
The Labour Bottleneck
Japan’s workforce is shrinking rapidly. As the world’s most demographically mature nation, it faces a projected daily shortage of 17.75 million labour hours by 2035—the equivalent of missing 3.84 million workers. Critical deskless sectors like construction and logistics are hit hardest as older staff retire and younger generations seek office roles.
Despite this urgent demand, existing infrastructure provides little relief. Japan's public employment network, Hello Work, operates largely as a static registry. It lacks the operational mechanics to verify specialized credentials or proactively reach out to non-desk workers—a demographic that rarely scans job boards and requires targeted, direct engagement.
What X Mile does differently
That bottleneck is precisely where X Mile built its business.
X Mile’s platform combines structured human touchpoints with automation, turning passive job seekers into successful placements. Beyond staffing, it introduced LogiPoke, a digital transformation platform that handles driver safety training, fleet management, and regulatory compliance checks for its enterprise clients.
By embedding workflow automation directly into daily operations, X Mile removes adoption barriers while delivering immediate productivity gains for its existing enterprise clients.
Why this stood out to us as investors
Several factors reinforced our conviction in X Mile:
Defensible moat: X Mile has built one of Japan’s largest proprietary databases of verified non-desk professionals, comprising more than 1.2 million certified professionals across 30,000 offices. The company incorporates AI-enabled workflows to automate high-volume sourcing and screening while preserving human judgment where it matters most.
Traction and scaling: The company successfully replicated its initial trucking recruitment playbook across construction, manufacturing, and taxi services. Its dual expansion across recruitment and workflow software generated over 90% annual recurring revenue growth.
A compelling platform expansion path: By expanding beyond placement services into enterprise software, X Mile is following the proven playbook of Tokyo Stock Exchange category leaders like M3 and SMS Co.—layering essential workflow software onto initial recruitment footholds to become the underlying operating system for Japan's non-desk sectors.
Our Conviction
Japan’s recruitment market for non-desk industries is estimated at JPY 300 billion (US $1.89 billion), complemented by hundreds of millions of yen in demand for sector-specific software.
As labour shortages accelerate, we see a meaningful opportunity for a platform that can modernise hiring and improves productivity for non-desk industries. Having established market leadership in transportation and logistics, X Mile will be deploying capital from its fundarise towards expanding its vertical AI product line and acquisitions of complementary businesses.
We look forward to partnering with X Mile as they scale.
